Double Double, Toil And Trouble

n our culturally degraded generation, many would suggest the title rhyme is drawn from the Harry Potter materials, or some other pop allusion to witchcraft. However, although the precise phrase is found in William Shakespeare’s 16th century masterpiece named Macbeth (in a scene wherein witches are cursing the title character), the concept of a doubled curse is actually found in the Old Testament.

Even more significant is the fact that a doubled curse also militates in favor of a doubled blessing – and this long forgotten principle has a direct application to Bible Prophecy, and the provocative subject of the end times.

In yet another of those supernatural ironies which are found all over the Bible, those Christians who are convinced there is no such thing as the aforementioned “end times,” should urgently conduct an in-depth probe of this very subject. Such sincere believers, who have discarded the futurist, or pre-millennial understanding of prophecy, have an intense need to perceive the veiled understanding of a doubled blessing (and its opposite corollary the doubled curse), and how it reconciles their flawed worldview with the prophetic concept of futurism.

For those unfamiliar with this doctrinal territory, the non-millennial approach (also called amillennialism) recognizes the present reality of the kingdom of God within the believer – a crucial truth. At the same time, the avalanche of stupidity found in the Rapture Cult with their ludicrous “Left Behind” fable, has soured many on the concept of futurist prophetic fulfillment, in terms of recognizing any coherent Scriptural outline concerning the events to come.

The simple thought that scripture shows many events yet to come in a prophetic context (a system known asfuturism), has been much maligned because of the corrupted theology of Jewish Supremacist prophetic systems. Non-millennalists categorically reject a literal one thousand year kingdom after Christ returns, because its proponents seek to revert to Old Testament legalism. This approach is seen in prophetic texts such as Zechariah’s last chapter, wherein all the nations which fought against Jerusalem must come to Israel to keep the Feast of Tabernacles:

“And it shall come to pass that every one that is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall even go up from year to year to worship the King, the Lord of hosts, and to keep the feast of tabernacles” (Zechariah 14:16).

Conversely, the most common objection among futurists is to note how non-millennalists internalize Christ’s one thousand year reign, and claim that what the Scriptures specify as a one thousand year period has now been underway for almost two thousand years-- since the time of the cross.

The reconciliation of these two perspectives is where we find the concept of doubled judgments, and doubled blessings.

Most believers understand the New Testament precept that everything which impacted Israel in the Old Testament anticipates events and Spiritual phenomena in the New Testament, yet most fail to perceive just how deeply these prophetic currents run:

“Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come” (I Corinthians 10:11).

This pattern did not cease with the opening of the New Covenant, but continues to this very day. A good example of this occurs when Christ is cautioned by the Pharisees to get out of Jerusalem, as Herod is likely to kill Him. The Lord’s cryptic response is not only fulfilled literally in His immediate timeline, it occurs in larger measure in ours:

“Behold, I cast out devils, and I do cures today and tomorrow, and the third day I shall be perfected” (Luke 13:32).

The two thousand years are the two days which have transpired in the body of Christ since the cross, and the “third day” is the millennial reign which is dead ahead – the seventh millennium since the creation.

Actually, there are dozens of verses and historic accounts which divinely prefigure the Sabbatarian millennium, or “day” in which we will all be “perfected.” Simultaneously, all those in Christ are already in the seventh kingdom – the millennial reign in one prophetic dimension – as the kingdom of God is the seventh kingdom which follows the six earthly kingdoms of Egypt, Assyria, Babylon, Persia, Greece, and Rome:

“And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom which shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever” (Daniel 2:44).

Simultaneous with the doubled blessing in the body of Christ for the last two thousand years, the doubled judgment has fallen on unrepentant Israel during her scattered sojourn among the nations.

“Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem, and cry unto her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned; for she hath received of the Lord’s hand double for all her sins” (Isaiah 40:2).

Unfortunately, most believers in our fallen generation cannot make this connection, largely because they’ve been deceptively programmed to reject the true identity of Israel – however, Isaiah’s utterance is obviously connected to the apostate entity seen in Revelation as Babylon:

“Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen…Reward her even as she rewarded you, and double unto her double according to her works; in the cup which she hath filled fill to her double” (Revelation 18:2, 6).

The reader will note how the “is fallen” phrase isdoubled, as the mystical phenomena of twice-speakis part of the same supernatural communication which is occurring – but that aspect of the Double Double, Toil And Trouble series will have to wait for another day.
